Melon /Cucumis melo L.
Description: This is smaller than the Honeydew melon, which it closely resembles.
Keeping qualities:
Ethylene: During the natural ripening process, Cantaloupe produce high amounts of ethylene gas. When exposed to elevated levels of ethylene the aging process is accelerated. This results in the fruit becoming soft.
Moisture Maintenance: Approx. Water Content: 59%
Through maintaining a cool and moist environment it is possible to maximize shelf life.
The ideal storage conditions are 85-90% RH at 10 - 14°C
the Cantaloupe should last 10-14 days. @ 20°C, 60% RH they may last for only 3-5 days.
Sensitivity Factors scale: 1-3 (3=very sensitive)
Temperature 2
Relative Humidity 2
Sensitivity to Ethylene 1
Chilling injuries 2
Weight Loss Graph: This graph shows how the product loses weight as it loses water when stored in a normal refrigerated environment of 5°C as opposed to one that is humidified to 95% RH.
